The ASSIGN art group - A brief history

A written constitution for ASSIGN was formally agreed on August 22, 2001 after a substantial period of consultation and debate within the potential membership. Advice had been taken from a variety of sources most particularly from the officers based at Social Enterprise Sunderland (SES), Hendon Co-op centre – the manager Kevin Marquis having been prominent in this part of the process.

To achieve this for the period of development, a Steering Group had been formed under the leadership of Colin Wilbourn (who had lobbied for the formation of an artists networking group in Sunderland for a considerable time). This eventually led to the adoption of the acronym “ASSIGN” (Arts’ Sunderland Support Initiative Group Network) as a working title for the group chosen from a range of other proposals suggested by members.

Between full group meetings of ASSIGN (AGM’s), routine business, correspondence, liaison with external public bodies and institutions is the responsibility of and elected General Management Committee (GMC).

A fee structure had been agreed, putting members at the formative AGM, subject to working amendments - details available on request.
